Twelve components, one living organism
Four products to sell and eight services provided by nature: each feeds the others, and the farm becomes more self-sufficient year after year.
Proven knowledge, enriched by science
Combining rice, fish and ducks has been practised for centuries in Asia. SYMBIORIZ takes up the principle and adds a food forest, beneficial insects, wetlands that clean the water and energy produced on site.
of humanity relies on rice as a staple food.
of experience behind the rice-fish system of Qingtian (China), recognised in 2005 among the first Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems of the FAO.
the price of ordinary rice: the value reached by rice from the rice-fish-duck systems of Congjiang, China.
Four products to sell
Organic rice
Two harvests a year, with no chemical fertiliser, in paddies shared with fish and ducks.
Fish
Carp and local species in ponds and paddies, each occupying its own place in the water.
Ducks
They weed, hunt insects and fertilise the paddies, then provide meat and eggs.
Food forest
Fruit, vegetables, honey and timber, on seven layers of vegetation that shelter the whole site.
Every waste becomes a resource
Ducks at work
They weed, eat insects and fertilise the water: the paddy needs no chemicals.
Fish feed the soil
Fish stir the mud, eat larvae and enrich the water that irrigates the rice.
Nothing is wasted
Rice straw and husks become mushrooms, compost, biochar and energy.
Water leaves clean
Wetlands filter all the water before it leaves the farm.
More rice, less pollution
A global analysis of rice paddies combined with animals, published in 2023, confirms the benefits of the principle.
